Here is the ASUS Padfone unboxing video. For those of you who don’t know what the Padfone is, it’s a 4.3 smartphone which can go into the 10 inch Asus “dummy” tablet, which then can go into a dock for full keyboard and mouse use just like the Transformer series from ASUS. There’s also a bluetooth stylus which you can use to make and receive phone calls just like in the spy movies. What are your thoughts on this device, will this ever come to the US?

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 is a 7 inch, Wi-Fi only android tablet that comes with Ice Cream Sandwich, Android 4.0 (TouchWiz) out of the box. It has a 1GHz dual core processor and is considered an entry-level tablet which only cost $249.99. It’s a great tablet for people who are looking for a tablet, but don’t want to spend more than $300. There are a lot of android options out there including the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the ASUS Transformer Prime which are a better option if you are looking for a high-end tablet.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 only comes in metallic gray and has 8GB of internal storage. There is a micro SD slot which you can add up to 32GB for a total of 40GB. It should have enough storage for most of your needs as most tablets are 16GB or 32GB.

Does it work well?: I won’t use benchmarks because it’s only a number. I’ll be using real world use for people who want to know if the tablet is worth the money. I do my usual speed test by going to the home screen and swiping through screens to see if there’s any lag. The one thing I despise is lag on electronics. I want a smooth transition from page to page no matter how many apps I have open or if I’m browsing the web, I hit the home key then want to swipe to a certain page where an app I want to use is at. The 1GHz dual core works just fine. No lag problem, silky smooth for the $249.99 price tag! The 7 inch display is really a preference for the user. Do you want a more portable tablet that isn’t too large and you can carry it around with you? Or do you want a bigger display with more real estate so you can browse the web and read emails without a problem. If you want mobility go with a 7 inch tablet. If you don’t care for mobility, get a 10 inch. I have the HP Touchpad and when I compare the two tablets side by side. It’s all a preference to you.

Battery life: Samsung claims the battery life is 7.5 hours. It really all depends on what you use your tablet for. Do you watch Netflix and movies? Do you listen to Pandora or your mp3′s? Will you be using it for browsing the internet while watching tv, writing emails or just catching up on news? I unplugged the tablet at 7am and left for the gym. I checked on the device at 10:20am and it was at 93%. I used the tablet to check emails, Facebook and browse the web while I watched TV. At around 3pm the device was at 83%. At 11:48pm the battery was at 64% after 16 hours and 48 minutes. I played some games including Temple Run and we all know how that is a time and battery killer. The battery life is sufficent enough to last the entire day with moderate use. You won’t be disappointed with this 7 inch tablet.

Smart Remote: I was surprised how well this app worked. You just point it at your TV, click the button and it sets it up automatically for you. You can use the Galaxy Tab 2 as a touchscreen universal remote, find out what TV shows and movies are currently playing, and also find new shows to watch. You can also control your cable box and DVR from the app. If I didn’t already have a Logitech Revue (Google TV) then I’d be using this app instead. Great functionality and cool factor!

Verdict: If you’re in the market for a 7 inch tablet, then this is a great buy! Just remember that the front facing camera only works good in a well lit room and there is no flash for the 3MP camera. Good enough to take pictures when you’re out but don’t expect high quality pictures. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 fits right in between a low budget and high premium tablet.
